CBT (Compulsory Basic Training)

'Think Bike' is an approved training body (ATB) by the DSA (Driving Standards Agency) to carry out compulsory basic training. Our instructors are also certified by the Driving Standards Agency to teach CBT at our centres.

In 1990 the government in the UK introduced the requirement for new motorcyclists to complete the CBT before a learner moped or motorcyclist is allowed to ride unaccompanied on UK roads. The main reason for implementing this new law was to help reduce the very high accident rate among inexperienced motorcyclists. After passing, new motorcyclists are still required to display an L-plate (D-plate in Wales).

NOTE - If you obtained your car driving licence before the 1st of February 2001, you do not need to complete the CBT to ride a moped.

• you want to ride a moped (a moped has a maximum engine size of 50cc and a maximum speed of 31mph)
• or you want to ride a motorcycle

4. practical on-road training
5. practical on-road riding

The above five parts are completed in sequence. The on-site riding part is carried out in a safe environment, away from road users in order to build your confidence. We will move you on to the next part when your instructor is satisfied you have learnt the necessary theory and demonstrated the practical skills to a safe basic level. You will then, as required by law, receive a minimum two hour on-road ride in part 5. During this part, you will be under the watchful eye of our instructor, who will be in contact with you via a radio link.

When you have satisfactorily completed all of the above five parts, a certificate of completion, called the DL196 will be issued to you. This is a legal document which validates the relevant entitlements on your driving licence. It is important once you obtain the DL196 to remember the following two points:-

• a DL196 certificate validating a provisional moped or provisional motorcycle entitlement lasts for two years - CBT will have to be retaken if both theory and practical tests are not passed within the two year certificate life
• for moped entitlement only, if you pass your car driving test whilst your DL196 is still current or complete a CBT course and obtain a DL196 after passing your car test, the certificate is not subject to expiry, you will therefore need to keep your DL196 certificate safely. Please note that this applies to mopeds only, for riding motorcycles as a learner the DL196 remains valid for two years
